Griffin King is an ordinary high school senior dealing with typical teenage issues: a bratty little sister, overbearing parents, an obnoxious best friend, and the unrequited love of his long-time crush. But when a virus chews through a large portion of the population, Griffin soon finds himself on the wrong side of a horror story. After being attacked by an infected, he loses his identity—his only desire is to consume human flesh.

After months of the infected roaming the broken landscape of the city, a cure is found and a mass injection of antiserum is administered to the horde. Griffin finds himself one of the Altered, a small group of "ex-infecteds" who have been cured, but irreparably changed. Now he must learn how to restart his life in an angry post-apocalyptic society where race, gender, and religion don’t matter anymore. Welcome to the new world. A world where people like him—people altered like him—are the minority.

First, the writing was superb—crisp and fresh, engagingly told from a 1st-person perspective of a teenaged boy. I felt drawn in not only by the well-described settings, but also the situations that he set up, truly conjuring powerful images and interesting scenarios that made me want to read on. The story flipped seamlessly back and forth from the action of a PA, zombie-filled world and a sterile, mysterious facility, where the psychological drama reminded me of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

DeVivo does a beautiful job keeping your interest without having much gore, typically found in other zombie apocalypse books. It’s a must-read for horror fans.
— Eddie Morales, Author of The Exorcism of Eve
[Griffin] has this intriguing clashing duality between his conscious self and his zombie side that made every chapter engaging, and I found it hard to put this book down.

Two years after the closing of the Altered Re-Assimilation Centers across the United States, Griffin King is trying to rejoin a vengeful society still nursing its wounds. Even though he has been ostensibly cured, no one is eager to trust an infected-turned-altered.

While various forces align against the Altered, a new breed called the Ferals look to bring about a second wave of the virus via a black market drug known as The Black Death. Compelled to continue the work left behind by his former caretaker, Dr. Holston, Griffin must decide who he can trust. But in a fractured landscape on the verge of war, how can Griffin be sure who is friend and who is enemy?

Plot was really important in this book, especially with the events that occur and how they ramp up. I liked that we spent more time in the present since we established Griffin’s past, and it made this story feel even more cohesive and easier to follow. There was plenty of action throughout and some shocking developments I didn’t see, and I love how that kept me on the edge of my seat.

If you want a great, epic zombie adventure, you can’t get much better than this!

Finished the book in one sitting as I couldn’t stop turning pages and seeing what will happen next. A unique take on the “zombie” genre that sets it apart from anything else.

After escaping their imprisonment on Plum Island, Griffin and Jarrod return to the mainland only to find that a second outbreak of the virus is ravaging the entire country. Only this time, help isn’t on the way.

Their only chance of survival is to get back to Dr. Oswald’s lab in Florida, where a unique Altered child could hold the key to a cure. Except, even if Griffin can find his way home, it may be too late to save mankind from its extinction event.

I love how the book ended and I am looking forward to reading her next series when it comes out!!

I like that we finally got to experience a long romp in the outside untamed world and the desperation that comes along with it.

And that ending? All the feels!

If you love the living dead, you’ve gotta get your hands on this series. It’s truly amazing!
